How to renumber a switch in a 6800ia stack

Although my previous post said you should not configure the 6800ia independently, it is possible and should be done at least in this case.

Here is how it’s done:
(1) attach to fex using (attach fex-id <>)
(2) Go to config mode and run the below command:
Switch(config)
#switch 1 renumber X     <== Do this for every switch in the stack
(3) save the changes and then reload the stack members

Update: 7-Dec-2015

this worked fine for me although when trying to save the changes I got the message “NVRAM Verification Failed”. On reload the switch’s number had changed successfully

  1. Hi,

I need to renumber my stacks, but there is no “renumber” in my switches.
In fact there is no (config) mode.

I can attack to the 6800IA and I see a lot of commands. There is a switch command but no renumber option…

Which software version do you have?

    thanks and regards.

    1. I am running Version 15.1(2)SY3. I will be upgrading soon. In the post I cut and pasted the notes from my TAC case, but you are correct I don’t think it can be done.

      FEX-101#switch ?
      switch number

      FEX-101#switch 1 ?
stack Stack port enable or disable

      FEX-101#switch 1 stack ?
port Stack port enable or disable

I don’t see any renumber command available. Just another example of TAC providing outdated information. The re-number commands do work on a 3750/3850 stack…

    2. If you have already tried the following steps and it doesn’t work then I’d give TAC a call.

      Here is how it’s done:
      (1) attach to fex using (attach fex-id )
      (2) Go to config mode and run the below command:
Switch(config)#switch 1 renumber X <== Do this for every switch in the stack
      (3) save the changes and then reload the stack members

      I'm currently running :
Cisco IOS Software, c6880x Software (c6880x-IPSERVICESK9-M), Version 15.1(2)SY4a, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

  2. Here below the exact commands to renumber switches, I did it and its work

    Parent-SW#module provision update fex XXX

    Parent-SW(exec-fex-update)#renumber 2 to 1
%FEX XXX slot 2 will reload upon giving the command ‘commit’.
Are you sure you want to proceed? [no]: y

    Parent-SW(exec-fex-update)#renumber 1 to 2
%FEX XXX slot 1 will reload upon giving the command ‘commit’.
Are you sure you want to proceed? [no]: y

    Parent-SW(exec-fex-update)#commit

After commit both switch reboot and they will be renumbered

    1. Good job digging into this. I haven’t had a lot of time lately to look at those 6880’s. Been neck deep in ACI stuff.
